Travel

We at IAM know that coming to our annual Encounter can put a strain on the ol' pocketbook. But we also know that whatever it costs to come, we are working hard to make it worth every penny - and more!

Still, between registration and travel costs, it can add up. SO, we have come up with a list of creative ways to cut down on the cost for out-of-towners to come to Encounter 09!

1) Consider staying at a hostel in Manhattan or a surrounding borough, rather than a hotel. Click HERE for a list of some hostels in New York City.

In past years many registrants have stayed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in TriBeCa. Rates for the Encounter weekend are $169/night as of 1/6/09.

2) Connect with others who are planning to come to the Encounter via IAM's Facebook page. You just might find someone(s) to share a hotel room with AND become a lifelong friend.

3) Think outside the borough. Manhattan is just one of the five boroughs that make up New York City, and there are hotels in the other boroughs that might be cheaper than a Manhattan hotel. The Encounter venues are convenient to the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, J, M, Z, A and C subway trains, as well as the Staten Island ferry. If you can find a hotel in a surrounding borough that is located near one of these subway lines, you'll be golden! Other options are Jersey City, Newark and Hoboken, NJ - all of which offer public transportation options into Manhattan.

4) Connect with your inner monk. Many monasteries in the area welcome pilgrims on a journey through New York City. Click HERE for a list of monasteries in NYC to look into staying at.
